Picture of Mike

Third Wave Audio is owned and run by New York recording engineer Mike Krowiak, and provides professional music mixing and mastering services.

Mike has always had a passion for music and sound. He played drums from the age of five, and taught himself guitar at the age of fourteen. He played in several bands through and after school, with a natural ear for arranging instrument and vocal parts.

He studied Engineering at New York Institute of Technology in Westbury, NY, and audio at the Institute of Audio Research in New York City, under Bob Katz and others.

He started his recording career at Manhattan's Right Track Recording, learning from then chief engineer Frank Filipetti and others. He moved on to The Hit Factory, and then to RPM Sound Studios.

RPM was a Studer/Neve room with the best new and vintage mics and outboard gear available. He worked with some of the top engineers and producers in the business, and artists across the musical spectrum, including:

• The Rolling Stones • Ani DiFranco • Suzanne Vega • New York Voices
• Billy Idol • Freddie Cole • Jewel • Lori Anderson
• Buddy Guy • The Brecker Brothers • Golden Palominos • David Byrne
• Matchbox 20 • Mike Stern • Joe Jackson • Marc Cohn
• Meshell Ndegeocello • Herbie Hancock • Sting • Glen Frey

Freelance work brought him to some of the best studios in Manhattan, with occasional projects in Woodstock, the Bahamas, California and London. He became a specialist at "live-in-studio" jazz records, where he mixed to stereo as the band performed, no overdubs or fixes. A great format for jazz—and all music...

These projects included records for:

• Jacky Terrasson • Eddie Henderson • Joe Locke • Freddie Cole • George Mraz • Eddie Harris

Once he and his wife started a family, Mike opted for a more predictable lifestyle and joined the Audio Technology group at Periphonics in New York, where they provided professional voice messaging in over 30 languages to all types of businesses. Nortel Networks bought the company, and Mike continued to play wider roles. He created a Sonic Enhancement Service to improve customer-provided recordings, he developed better speech normalization routines, and finally took charge of Nortel's Audio Services group.

Mike now brings his experience and passion for music and sound to Third Wave Audio.
